How to use this calculator

1. Choose what you want to find: pace, time or distance. 2. Pick kilometres or miles — the pace unit follows automatically. 3. Enter your known numbers (distance, time as h:m:s, or pace as min:sec). 4. Press Calculate to get your answer plus the equivalent speed.

How it works

Pace = time ÷ distance. A 55-minute 10 km run is 55 ÷ 10 = 5.5 minutes per km, or 5:30 min/km. From pace you can predict race time (pace × distance) or work out how far a run was (time ÷ pace). The calculator also shows speed, the inverse of pace, in km/h or mph.

Worked example: 10 km in 55:00 → pace 5:30 min/km, speed about 10.9 km/h. In miles: 6.21 miles in 55:00 → pace 8:51 min/mile, speed about 6.8 mph.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good running pace? It depends on your fitness and goals. A relaxed beginner pace is roughly 7 to 9 minutes per km (11 to 14.5 min per mile). Regular runners often settle around 5:30 to 7 min/km (9 to 11 min/mile), and trained runners go faster than 5 min/km (8 min/mile). Compare your pace against yourself, not others — progress is what matters.

How can I improve my running pace? The biggest gains come from consistency plus variety: one interval or tempo session per week, a longer easy run, basic leg strength work, and enough sleep. Small weekly increases (no more than about 10 percent) keep injuries away while your pace drops over months.

What is the difference between pace and speed? Pace is time per unit of distance, like 6 minutes per km; speed is distance per unit of time, like 10 km/h. They are inverses of each other: faster pace means higher speed. Runners usually talk in pace, cyclists in speed.

How do I calculate my marathon pace? Divide your target finish time by 42.195 km (26.2 miles). For a 4-hour marathon that is 240 minutes ÷ 42.195 = about 5:41 per km, or 9:09 per mile. Use this calculator in time mode to check any race distance.
