How it works
BMR is the calories burned at complete rest, estimated with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. TDEE = BMR × activity factor. From TDEE, weight loss is usually TDEE − 500 kcal and muscle gain is TDEE + 300 kcal.
Worked example: A 30-year-old man, 75 kg, 175 cm, moderately active: BMR about 1,699 kcal, TDEE about 2,633 kcal — about 2,133 kcal for weight loss, 2,633 kcal for maintenance, and 2,933 kcal for muscle gain.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is TDEE? TDEE, total daily energy expenditure, is the total calories you burn per day, including rest, movement and exercise. It is your BMR multiplied by an activity factor.
How is TDEE different from BMR? BMR is the calories burned at complete rest. TDEE adds daily activity on top of BMR, so TDEE is always higher than BMR for an active person.
